Planning a fun, typically Dutch day out and thinking, “Where should I go?” I’ve got you. Let me take you to my roots, a charming little village on the Markermeer. Welcome to Volendam!
This fishing village is famous for its lively harbour, unique dialect, traditional houses, wooden boats, folk costumes and locals who look like they’ve stepped straight out of a postcard (or a fashion shoot, honestly). And yes… eel. A lot of eel. More eel than sushi, I’d say.
But don’t worry it’s not just about fish (although we’ll get to that soon). So, what should you absolutely not miss during your day in Volendam? Let’s dive into my personal favourites.
Where is Volendam and why does everyone know it?
Over 2 million people visit this tiny town every year. Not bad for a place with just over 22,000 residents. Located just north of Amsterdam on the Markermeer, Volendam is every bit as cute as it sounds, but it’s also got a bit of star power.
This village has produced more musical legends per square metre than a Dutch jukebox. Jan Smit, Nick & Simon, BZN, The Cats, and 3JS. Chances are, you’ve heard at least one of them (even if you didn’t realise it).
Add a rich fishing history, traditional costumes, and a strong sense of community, and you’ve got Volendam in a nutshell.
Thinking, “Okay, nice history… now what?” Let’s get into the good stuff. Here’s what makes Volendam such a great spot for a day trip.
Terraces, the famous Dike & harbour views
Start your day the Volendam way with a “koppie” (that’s coffee in local language) on a terrace along the Dike.
It doesn’t matter if it’s Monday morning or Saturday night, this place is always buzzing. On sunny days, it’s perfect for people watching with a view of the harbour. And once you sit down… well, don’t be surprised if you’re still there hours later (closing time can be 2am at weekends just saying).
The Dike is where everything happens. Fish stalls, souvenir shops, cosy pubs, and the occasional seagull eyeing up your snack.

There’s only one diehard fisherman still active in Volendam today. One!
That iconic photo in traditional costume
Is it touristy? Absolutely. Is it worth it? Also yes.
If you’re in Volendam, you simply have to take a photo in traditional Dutch costume. Because honestly when else will you wear a lace cap, an embroidered skirt, and hold a plastic fish while posing on a wooden bench?

Pro tip:
Book ahead, especially in summer. “We’ll just see when we get there” can quickly turn into “everything’s fully booked”. And go early in the morning for a quieter experience.

The Doolhof: Step into old Volendam
Just a few steps off the Dike and boom! You’re in another century. Welcome to ‘Het Doolhof‘ (labyrinth), the oldest part of Volendam.
It’s a charming maze of narrow alleyways and wooden fishermen’s cottages that date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Everything is still in its original style with low façades, wooden shutters, crooked walls, and cobblestones underfoot.
It’s cozy, full of character, and incredibly photogenic. Think flower boxes on window sills, the ‘famous’ yellow footbridge, and if you’re lucky, a cat napping on a windowsill.
This part of Volendam feels like an open air museum. An absolute must-see for your visit.
Catch of the day or something sweet?
In a fishing village, skipping the seafood would be criminal. Try herring, kibbeling (fried bites of fishy gold), cod, or a classic eel sandwich.
Looking for the best? Head straight to Smit-Bokkum, they’re the pros. Don’t forget to peek into the smokehouse and the Palingsound museum while you’re at it.
Not a fan of fish? No judgment. Swing by the poffertjes stand or treat yourself at Woltje’s Stroopwafels. You’ll get snacks, history story’s and a demo. Yes please.
Take the boat to Marken
This ferry ride has been a true Volendam classic since 1933. In just 30 minutes, you’ll find yourself in an equally picturesque village (formerly an island) with charming wooden houses, scenic bridges, and locals in totally different traditional clothing.
Marken is perfect for a relaxing walk, a peaceful bike ride, or just a slow stroll while soaking up the storybook vibes. Instagram alert!
From Marken, it’s super easy to continue your journey by public transport, or hop right back on the same ferry to return to Volendam.

Don’t expect big shopping streets, but do expect plenty of unique, independent boutiques.

A small museum with big stories
The Volendam Museum is one of those places you might not plan for, but absolutely shouldn’t miss.
You’ll step straight into an old Volendam home, filled with fascinating stories and artefacts. Think wooden interiors, traditional costumes, intricate cigar box art (yes, that’s a thing), and photos dating back to the 19th century.
It really brings the past to life and gives you a whole new appreciation for how people used to live (imagine twelve people sharing a tiny bed space…).

Explore the Volendam countryside by bike
Volendam is stunning on its own, but the surrounding area is just as beautiful! Hop on a bike and discover the classic Dutch landscape with green fields, winding dykes, charming villages, and the occasional windmill.
In just a few pedals, you’ll be in Edam (yes, the cheese one), Monnickendam, Katwoude, or out in the countryside surrounded by cows.

Quick tips before you go:
- Parking: Paid parking near the harbour or just outside the centre. In the centre, you’ll find blue zone parking (30–90 minutes).
- Public transport: From Amsterdam Central, take bus 316. From Amsterdam Noord, take bus 110. Both drop you almost right on the Dijk.
- Best time to visit: Spring and summer are lively and sunny. But winter has its charm too. Quiet, cozy, and zero queues for fish!
