10x the best restaurants & cafés on the Dike
Volendam is so much more than just a photogenic fishing village. It’s the kind of place where you come for a quick coffee… and somehow end up staying all day.
Whether you’re here for a long lunch, a romantic dinner, or just drinks with a view over the water, you’ll be more than fine here.
In this guide, I’m sharing my favourite restaurants and cafés in Volendam.
My tip? Don’t rush it. Start with ‘een koppie’ (Volendams for coffee and cake), stay for a drink, and finish with a proper dinner while the sun slowly sets over the IJsselmeer.
Thirty5
Let’s start strong. If you’re looking for a trendy spot with harbour views, Thirty5 is it.
This is one of my personal favourites. Think juicy burgers, gyoza, or fresh oysters if you’re feeling fancy.
Everything looks good, tastes even better, and the service is genuinely friendly.
The vibe? Stylish, but still relaxed. Perfect if you want to escape the busiest crowds and just sit, eat, drink… and stay a little longer than planned.

Smit-Bokkum
Eel. Just eel.
If you visit Volendam and skip Smit-Bokkum… honestly, you’re missing a big part of the experience.
This place has been doing its thing since 1856, smoking eel the traditional way and you can taste that history.
Not into eel? No problem. There are plenty of other (fish) dishes, a good glass of wine, and a view over the IJsselmeer that does the rest.
Simple, authentic, and very Volendam.

Romy’s Kitchen
Small, cosy, and exactly what you want for a slow morning or relaxed lunch.
Everything here is homemade soups, quiches, pancakes, and cakes you’ll definitely be thinking about later.
It’s the kind of place where time slows down a bit. Inside is warm and inviting, and outside there’s a cute little terrace that still works even on slightly grey days.

A-fusion
For sushi lovers, or honestly, anyone who appreciates really good food.
A-Fusion is all about high-end Asian dishes done right. Sushi, dim sum, curries, cocktails… it all just works.
The atmosphere is warm, the service is smooth, and everything feels a little bit elevated (without being too formal).
Perfect for a slightly fancier night out.

Café de Dijk
A true classic. Right on the water, always busy, always a good idea.
This is one of those places where you sit down and immediately feel like you’ve made the right choice.
Big portions, good food, friendly staff, and a view that never gets old.
Bonus: during holidays, it turns into a proper party spot. Because yes… Volendam knows how to celebrate 😉

Grand Café de Botterwerf
Just a few minutes away from the Dike, but it feels like a little escape from the crowds. Grand Café de Botterwerf is relaxed, spacious, and perfect for a proper dinner.
The menu is varied, with plenty of fish and meat dishes, and everything is well-prepared and generously served. It’s the kind of place where you can really take your time, enjoy a good glass of wine, and settle in for the evening.
There are also regular live performances (yes, Volendam and music go hand in hand), which makes the experience just that little bit more special.

Lotje Wine & Dine
Come for the wine… stay for everything else.
Warm atmosphere, great food, and a beautiful view over the water.
You’ll probably tell yourself you’re just stopping for a drink. And then suddenly you’re ordering starters, mains… and yes, dessert “to share” (which no one shares).

’t Havengat / ’t Gat van Nederland
Good food, good drinks, good vibes. Simple as that.
This place has the perfect mix of locals and visitors, which always makes it feel a bit more real.
During the day it’s relaxed and cosy. In the evening (especially weekends), it turns into a lively bar where you might just end up dancing.
Fun tip: in Volendam, it’s completely normal to order ranja (yes, a kind of lemonade) as an adult and you’ll get a HUGE glass with ice. Surprisingly perfect after a night out. 😉

For the indecisive (or just very hungry).
Restaurant Pieterman lets you try a bit of everything. You can go for à la carte, or choose the all-you-can-eat option, but with surprisingly good quality.
Expect a mix of small dishes, from fish and meat to warm and cold bites, so you can keep tasting and trying new things. Perfect if you’re with a group, or just in the mood to order a little bit of everything.
The atmosphere is modern and lively, making it a great choice for a relaxed dinner with friends or family.

Van der Valk Hotel Volendam
Not right on the Dike, but definitely worth the short detour.
Van der Valk Hotel Volendam is spacious, modern, and honestly a bit underrated when it comes to food.
The menu is extensive, with plenty of options, from fish and meat to vegetarian dishes, so it’s a great choice if you’re with a group or just can’t decide what you’re in the mood for.
Portions are generous (as you’d expect), the quality is solid, and the atmosphere is relaxed.
And maybe the best part? You’re just outside the busy centre, so you can actually enjoy your lunch or dinner without the crowds. Perfect if you’re ready for a slightly calmer moment during your day in Volendam.
